Locals Barbara and Cecile have launched a new campaign to raise awareness and funds for children living in the so-called Jungle refugee camp in Calais, where over 6000 people are now thought to live in terrible conditions.
Peace & Dove is an interactive, creative, community project which aims to show solidarity amongst the bars, cafes, chalets and schools in the Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz area and beyond while at the same time raise important funds for refugees. Barbara and Cecile are distributing flyers with origami bird templates to several local businesses, along with a collection tin. It’s hoped that people will make a donation and a paper dove to make a difference to the children stranded in Calais. The doves are hung up from the ceiling or in a window as they are made and they’ll stay there until the end of the winter season before flocking together and travelling to the UNHCR headquarters in Geneva to be exhibited. They’ll then travel to their final destination in Calais.
Cecile told us; “There are hundreds of children living in diabolical conditions, many of them unaccompanied, and the support they receive comes only as a result of donations and the hard work of volunteers. Whilst we enjoy the luxury of the mountains, it is important that we remember those who have a much harder life to endure and take a moment to contribute to helping.”
Getting involved is easy. Look out for the hanging doves in the windows of local bars and cafes such as Bec Jaune in Morzine, Le Bouche à Oreille in Saint Jean d’Aulps, Satellite Coffee and Beanies on the Rue du Bourg and then make a donation, follow the origami instructions to make your dove and hang it in the window! All money raised will go directly to L’Auberge de Migrants and Help Refugees, the two main charities working on the ground in Calais and supporting volunteer led facilities such as The Women and Children’s Centre and Calais Jungle Youth.
Peace & Dove have also arranged a clothing collection this week and the team from Alpine Logistics have offered an empty van to take clothing and provisions to Calais. If you’ve any winter clothing you’d like to donate, you can drop it at the Geranium Immobilier office in Saint Jean d’Aulps, or Cecile and Barbara can collect from you.
